On Sunday, September 23, 2018, St. John School in Plaquemine will culminate its Homecoming Week activities with a Mass to honor the many religious instrumental in its 165-year history. St. John School is the second oldest Catholic School in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.
The Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
Catholic education started in Plaquemine in 1853 under Father Charles Chambost who founded the College of Immaculate Conception that granted B.A. and B.S. degrees by the State of Louisiana and also began a separate boys’ school. He engaged the services of the Marianite Sisters of the Holy Cross to set up a girls’ school, St. Basil’s Academy. In the early 1900’s, the girls’ and boys’ schools were merged into St. John School under the leadership of Monsignor Leonard Robin.
To continue this rich legacy, the school launched a three year Continue the Legacy Capital Campaign in 2017. Among the many completed projects totaling approximately $850,000 are replacing the elementary school roof, installing new heating and air conditioning units, and refurbishing and securing restrooms in the elementary school. The gym is currently being renovated with a new roof, new heating and air conditioning and new ceiling. Additional funds are needed to complete the interior aspects of the gym including flooring, bleachers, locker rooms and concession areas. Future projects of the campaign include securing the perimeter of the campus, technology upgrades, renovating the high school and consolidating the library for all grades.
